Southwest All-Star Band Drum majors stand and listen to the Greater Houston All-Star Band as the Missouri City Juneteenth Celebration Foundation holds a Battle of the High School Bands June 14, 2008 at Hunters Glen Park. The showdown took place as each band took turns playing at the basketball courts. The winner was judged from crowd reaction. The Southwest All-Star Band won the competition. The Greater Houston All-Star Band, consisting of HISD high school band members, took on the South West All Star Band, consisting of high school band members from Madison, Willowridge, Marshall and Hightower. Desirae Clark, of Copperas Cove, TX is overcome with emotion at Eyes Wide Open: The Cost of War to Texas, on display at Discovery Green Park June 14, 2008 from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm. Eyes Wide Open: The Cost of War to Texas focuses on the specific costs of war to the state of Texas. "I believe in the war," Clark said, after visiting the GOP convention at the Brown Center. She added that she has many friends that have deployed overseas. "I believe freedom isn't free," she said. In response to seeing the exhibit, she added, "Simply seeing that the cost of freedom is high," caused her to become emotional. The exhibit included 388 pairs of boots representing fallen servicemen and women from Texas, and a visual representation of the Iraqi civilian casualties. AFSC, an international social justice organization, created Eyes Wide Open: The Human Cost of War to illustrate the lives lost in the war in Iraq.
